K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final: Fletch Play by Play

Published exclusively at ifi.com, live in December 2010

By Daniel Fletcher
It’s here!  The play-by-play will be updated as the event goes on. Refresh after each round, entrance and VTR.
——
*Shiavello, King Mo Lawal and Kogan just laying down the pre-fight hype. Mo’s a strange replacement; Sefo usually does a decent job on these.
*Schilt/Kyotaro breakdown – Kogan actually made a case for a Kyotaro win! You’re a brave man!
*King Mo thinks Saki can pull it off – perhaps so, as Ghita is rumoured injured?
*Voice confirms Ghita may be carrying a groin injury
*Mo seems surprised that all the guys are ‘big’.  “They look small on TV” – Mo, what the F*CK kind of TV do you have??????
The hype vids and opening ceremony
*Reem reveals he was inspired by WWF and Hulk Hogan. Who’d have thought??????
*FEG are desperate for Reem or Kyotaro to win this. It’s obvious.
*Semmy seems peeved that he is not being favoured.
*”Make me as small as you want. I’m still the biggest man.”  Nice, but lets be real Semmy eh? Your size helps.
*Fighters are coming out. Wow….. FEG are broke.
*You wouldn’t believe how much FEG have downgraded. The huge screens, fireworks, steps and aisle of recent years has been shelved.
*”The Super Bowl of striking”  ~Schiavello
*Budget Ceremony over – back to bizarre hype vids with strange music, great fighter footage, and things that appeal to Japanese people!
Event begins
*First entrance to Show Me Love! Epic!  Come on Zimmerman
*Ah, song changed. Now a Euro-techno-dance type tune. Reminds me of Ibiza. Awesome!
*Texeira coming out. Former Reem victim vs Reem’s GG teammate.
*Holland vs Brazil
Ewerton Texeira vs Errol Zimmerman
Round 1:  Tex takes the round. Someone has lit a FIRE under him!  Slipping punches, landing hooks and jabs, shared a lovely knee, and landed a big right hand in the dying seconds of the round. At this rate, he will get the reserve spot for the GP.
Round 2: Tex lands counter rights at will, Zimmerman fires back with punches and right body kick, Tex shows no respect, stands his ground. Good flurry on the ropes. Tex claims another round, this is a GREAT performance!
Round 3: Errol is more aggressive now, walking forwards throwing shots, off balance after a few wilder shots, Tex is more on his toes, Errol needs the knockout…. no, he’s not getting it, Errol is landing too.
Fight over. This will be easy win for Texeira. Official reserve fighter will be Ewerton Texeira
Mighty Mo vs Peter Aerts
*Pre-fight vid showing Aerts. He is motivated, hungry etc.
*Good to see the legend back. Crazy though; he won 3 Grand Prix’s, all in the NINETIES!
*Hype vids finally over- entrances now. It’s the trademark music of Aerts. Mr K-1 is in the house.
*Aerts’ 17th K-1 World Grand Prix.  Winner of three. Crazy, the definition of “veteran”.
Round 1:  Aerts lands early groin shot… Mo has no luck with his knackers. How he has so many kids I’ve no idea.
Back on: Aerts lands head shots, avoids the trademark big overhand right from Mo, lands a great left head kick to the jaw. Mo gets up groggy, stumbles after him and tries two takedowns! Tries one last big right, then tucks up. Aerts unloads on him against the ropes, drops him. Early finish for Mr K-1. Great performance, and he still has his cardio!
Semmy Schilt vs Kyotaro
*The K-1 Super Heavyweight champ and reigning K-1 World Grand Prix champ (Sem) vs the K-1 Heavyweight champ (Kyotaro).
*Epic Sem hype vid. Semmy seems motivated.
*Sem seems hurt by his unpopularity / being out of favour. “We’ll see who’s laughing when I’m champ”. Hey, I love ya Sem!
*Dramatic entrance in progress! Always great. Wait, song changed. Kyotaro’s entrance is great! He looks pumped.
*Linkin Park (sic?)  Semmy?  Everyone else in GG uses Euro dance…. you need to take a leaf out of their books!
*National anthems? I love it. MMA needs more of this…..
Round 1:
Another groin shot. Sem is not in 2009 form, he lands jabs as opposed to “deathjabs”. Sem takes the round, but Kyo is being aggressive. Now tucking; Sem is landing teeps and throwing his front leg as usual, his modus operandi being the liver kick cum teep.
Round 2: Sem starts out as usual, Kyotaro throws some overhands to get inside the range, he’s struggling with the front kicks. Stiff jab, Kyo comes forwards and is cheered, backs Sem into a corner, Sem takes the rest of the round with jabs and push kicks.
Round 3: Sem continues the same modus operandi. Machine like – short knees, push kicks cum teeps, jabs. It’s like sparring. Kyo throws some overhands. Kyo has point deduction for clinching, Sem is precise and dominant, but not as devastating as last year. Easy and controlling from Sem.
*Sem just fought for longer in his FIRST match at this year’s finals, than he did at last years finals combined. He blitzed through 3 fights to win last year. This year, he looks like regular Sem. Hope he brings the heat against Aerts; on paper that’s a classic between two of the top 3 GOAT’s.
I hope 2009 WGP Finals Semmy wasn’t a one-off.
Daniel Ghita vs Gokhan Saki
*This one should be the Fight of the Night.
*Ghita was tipped to win the whole tourney. Shame about his groin injury. Hype vid – Saki says he’s “not a dark horse”, he’s here to win. He will probably get through this round, if Ghita’s kicks are compromised by his groin.
*Entrances- slow build to each one is great! They tease with one song, and launch into another. I guess FEG realise they’ve lost some of the glitz with the downgrade. Making up for it with entrances.
Round 1:
This is brilliant. Best one of the night I bet. Saki almost tags him with leg kicks/punch combo, then spinning back kick to the liver, Leko style. Ghita is still kicking – if groin bothers him, he’s not showing it. Wow, this is epic. Saki is damn crisp, Ghita not far behind, they’re trading liver and leg kicks, Saki landing more punches and Ghita counters with left liver kicks and leg kicks, Saki in turn counters with leg kick punch combos, this is amazing.
Round 2: War of Attrition continues. Absolutely tremendous stuff; it’s great how they stand and trade, take-one-to-give-one. Saki peppering him with a variety of kicks, throwing head kicks on the much taller man, Ghita is tenderising his legs, smashing his shin bone into the body and legs of the Turk.
Round 3: more of the same. Saki steals it as Ghita slows. Draw!
Round 4: Ghita does damage with leg kicks, but Saki continues on and steals a close round with a late kick. Wins the unanimous decision.
*Sorry the above pbp isn’t more detailed, but I was too wrapped up in the fight. That was fantastic.
*Saki will not win this tournament. If he ever could that is, given his size…. no, after that war, surely his cardio is too depleted to manage to championship display against Reem or Spong?
*Either way, fan of both Ghita and Saki. Great fight dictated almost entirely by kicks. Two of the best kickers around – so crisp.
Alistair Overeem vs Tyrone Spong
*Reem again professes his love for Hulk Hogan, in the pre-fight VTR.
*Loving these VTR’s. FEG use such random music!
*Entrance: who’s coming out to Puff Daddy and Notorious BIG? “Victory”. Oh…. it’s Spong. Sorry mate, I think this is the wrong theme to use against Reem!
*Reem is using his old theme!!!!!!  Sensastion White The Anthem, 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!
*The K-1 WGP 2010 just got UBER.
Round 1:  Reem tries a flying UberKnee, throws hands, clinches. Another clinch and knee, he takes a warning. Almost a deduction – FEG probably wish they hadn’t taken the clinch out, now that they like Reem. Wow – Spong tags him! Reem is wobbly! Flurries, Reem takes it all on his gloves, recovers. Reem isn’t chinny anymore. Spong will take the round though. Reem recovers, hits a few knees, gets warned about the clinch again. Great, great round. This is fantastic.
Round 2: Spong starts out aggressive; catches Reem with a catch and trip, then smashes a leg kick home with Reem staggering, Spong outlands him early, Reem comes back, the tide turns in his favour and he steals the round, tags him twice when Spong lowers his hands.
Round 3: Tide definitely turns – late in first minute of the round, Reem forces it into the corner, picks his big shots a la the Ben Edwards fight… Spong gets out of the corner but takes a monster right that wobbles him. Ref gives him a standing count – Reem goes back in, switches it up with a teep and leg kicks, Spong recovers well, shows he is durable, Reem tries picking his shots to finish, then eases off with twenty seconds left. He’s sealed the win, by stealing round 2 and then scoring the 10/8 this time. He takes a UD.
*Great fight. THIS Spong would’ve beaten JLB in my opinion. He showed his durability.
Reem will have his way with Saki, unless he’s gassed out too! Can Saki kick his (rather skinny, comparatively) legs away, and deplete Reem’s gas tank? Or will Reem be too big, too powerful, too much?
———-
A filler fight now. It’s Yusuke Fujimoto against It’s Showtime HW champ Hesdy Gerges.
*He’s coming out to Ace of Base!  It’s A Beautiful Life!  I love the randomness of Japanese fightsports
*This will be the last we see of Fujimoto.
Round 1:
Horrible fight. He dropped him, then ended it with a leg kick that made me cringe. That was an awful fight – the IS HW champ against Fujimoto, who – no offence – is not a top lad. And he’s long past his best. Awful fight. Hope he retires.
Ah, he is. Long, long retirement speech is in progress.
It’s over. Farewell, Fujimoto. Next up is semi-final number 1.
Peter Aerts vs Semmy Schilt
*Sem’s entrance theme again. Is it Linkin Park? I dont know.
*Great reception for Aerts. Voice is excitable again!
National anthem to follow? No.
Round 1:
Wow! Aerts took the round! Showing his veteran’s head, he threw feints and drew Schilt in, got on the inside and threw bombs upwards at the High Tower. Great round, forced him onto backfoot – a seven feet tall 4x K-1 WGP winner, at that. Great stuff. I give it narrowly to Aerts, but Sem to be fair lands jabs and kicks..
Round 2:
Another good round, chases Sem, High Tower lands a knee and Peter gets his nice new cut checked out. Deemed OK to continue. Sem is looking more like old-school Sem – the one FEG hate – mechanical, considered “boring”, but dominant. Peter ups his aggression later on, and lands punches, forcing Sem back. Aerts steals a round for me, but it’s scored a draw on all official cards.
Round 3:
He’s done it! WOW! Aerts clearly takes the round! Sem gets tired, his movement slows, and get rocked back onto the ropes time after time by the old veteran. He brought it with ferocity, tenacity. He must have won!
*judge one. Draw. What? Fuck right off.
*judge two: Aerts. Good lad!
*judge three: Aerts! He’s done it! He’s in the final! 12 years after his last GP win!!!!!!!
This is incredible stuff. The last hurrah of Peter Aerts – I can only imagine how hard he’s trained for this one. This is immensely epic.
Alistair Overeem vs Gokhan Saki
*Epic entrances – Reem comes out to Sensation White again.
*Commentators speculate the Saki dropped Reem in sparring prior to the WGP.
Round 1:
Wow. Saki starts strong, lands a spinning back kick to the HEAD, drops Reem. Saki falls too, and somehow Reem gets away with it, ref doesn’t count it as a knockdown. Reem recovers quick, throws some knees, lands a body kick to the liver to visibly shakes Saki against the ropes, drops back and picks his shots. Will end soon. It does; Reem throws left liver kick, Saki visibly drops his left hand across to try and block – is his right arm broken? Or is his body so damaged from the previous kick, and the damage Ghita inflicted? Either way, he stumbles back and takes a standing eight count, and the referee waves it off. First round finish – Reem goes into the final strong.
Final will be a rematch of Peter Aerts vs Alistair Overeem.
Will Aerts win in a fairytale, or get utterly dominated again?
—-
Now there’s a long period of filler to come. A Japanese girl band are on, that Reem was publicising the event with. It’s hilarious.
*A lot of filler
*Rumour – Aerts is banged up
*Rumour – Semmy Schilt might step in for Aerts, to face his teammate Reem in the final? God I hope not – it would be like 2002, with Hoost losing to Sapp then winning the tourney
*Confirmed – Aerts vs Reem WILL GO DOWN!
Reserve bout:
Sergei Kharitonov vs Singh Jaideep
Round 1:
Uh oh. Sergei tried his usual “hands heavy” K-1 style, not throwing kicks. Gets caught by a knee, tries for a takedown! Guess it’s instinct for the MMA fighter, when you’re rocked. Dropped by a straight right, then takes eight count. Gets up, takes a jab-cross combination cleanly, almost goes down, does the chicken dance Zab Judah style and grabs the ropes to stay up. The ref waves it off. This is a bit of an embarrassing one for a Golden Glory fighter, even one who is primarily a Mixed Martial Arts competitor.
Lets move on swiftly. The final is next!
The K-1 World Grand Prix 2010: Final
Peter Aerts vs Alistair Overeem
*rematch of Reem’s one-sided dominance over the 3x WGP winning legend Aerts
*Aerts is reportedly injured. It will be a fairytale if he wins
*Reem goes in as heavy favourite
*Reem will become the first major HW champ in K-1 and MMA. Sem doesn’t count – Pancrase at the time wasn’t a major org.
*Apparently the cutmen have done “a good job” on the cut that Aerts sustained during the Schilt fight.
*Entrance – third Sensation White!  The REEM is on the way!
*It strikes me that the Greatest Fighter in the World right now could be in that ring.  Reem is MMA and K-1 royalty – a top boy in TWO DIFFERENT COMBAT SPORTS.
*Here comes Mr K-1 himself. Can Aerts match Hoost and Schilt, on 4 WGP wins?
*The tension is palpable. This is epic.
Round 1:
WOW. Aerts threw a left head kick early, but Reem blocked and got him into a corner. He threw precisely – not a fast flurry, but picking his shots, which THUDDED into Aerts. He hurt him with a left-right-left to the body and head – Aerts looked away, and looked finished – and Reem pushed past the referee who was tentatively about to step in, and fired one last huge hook to Aerts’ head. The ref finally stepped in, and Aerts fell. As he rose, Reem stood on the second rope at the opposite corner, knowing it was done. The ref duly waved it off – defeat was in Aerts’ eyes.
Alistair Overeem is the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 champion.  He is also the Strikeforce World Heavyweight MMA champion. He may well be the #1 fighter in the world.
This was spellbinding. He is a world champion in 2 sports, and the worlds best striker. Fantastic stuff.
*Reem is given his K-1 title belt, his huge trophy, and his laurel wreath. He is crowned, The Man.
