M-1 Challenge XXII: Three New Champions!

Shock and Awe Fuel  M-1 Challenge XXII

At the Druzhba Arena in Moscow, Russia, a combined 24 fighters fought under the M-1 Global banner, and only two of them needed the judges to determine who the winner of their bout was. The rest finished in a variety of ways, showcasing the plethora of European and worldwide talent that M-1 now has under its belt. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu savage Vinny Magalhaes made a successful debut for the org, winning via armbar in the second round. Three M-1 Challenge world titles were up for grabs at the event, with 191lbs Vyacheslav Vasilevsky claiming the Light-Heavyweight strap in Fight of the Night, by defeating Tomasz Narkun due to “verbal submission” after the referee called a standup. Vasilevsky had asserted his dominance by the end of round 1, after winning the wild flurry and following Narkun down to the ground to try to finish. While the much larger man survived to see the second, it continued in the same manner. The pocket-rocket Vasilevsky kept the pressure up, and Narkun was utterly unable to counter. As the referee called a standup after some Ground’n'Pound, the big man verbally submitted, and the fight was waved off. He was broken; broken, by a 191lbs fighter with an impressive ledger of 11-1. Look out for Vaskilevsky – something tells me he could be a future top boy at middleweight, if he ever decides to cut a measly six pounds and fight men closer to his own size. For now, enjoy the M-1 Challenge World Light Heavyweight champion.
The Welterweight championship went to Shamil Zuvarov, after a TKO stoppage in the fourth round of an enjoyable fight. Crowned middleweight titleholder was Rafal Moks, who earned a surprise submission win over “The White Wolf” Magomed Sultanakhmedov via heel hook after only nineteen seconds of the first round.
“The fighters definitely delivered on the canvas tonight,” says Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global. “All members from the Russian Ministry of Sport in attendance were highly impressed with the quality of fights and this marks a key moment in the continuous development of MMA in Europe. Immediate fan feedback has been favorable to say the least and now we drive our path towards 2011 which is set to be our most successful year yet.”
